Pierre Ellis

A makeup artist and hairstylist who finds peace in pursuing her passions and keeping her support system near.

While she credits God for all of her success, she maintains that she wouldn't have reached her goals without the ones that matter most: her "Maw Maw," mother, stepfather, sister, boyfriend, and friends who keep her grounded.

In your own words, who are you?

"I am @BeautybyPierre. I also go by @PierretheGirl. I am a New Orleans native who has relocated to NYC. I am a makeup artist, hairstylist, and I also have an IG fashion blog. New Orleans is such a magical place but there aren't many resources to help people achieve their dreams. I want to get out and get those resources and bring them back to the city, so I can help others acheive their dreams.”

With the lack of resources in New Orleans to foster entrepreneurship in the youth, what gave you the motivation to chase your dreams?

"From a young age, my mom always told me to do better than her. Growing up, I saw my mom hustle & bustle to ensure that we never wanted for nothing. Once I realized my gift was in hair and makeup, I knew I couldn't make it here because I didn't want to be behind a chair. I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to travel and work on sets. With that mentality my mom instilled in me, I just left! I knew I had nothing to lose, and I could only gain from the experiences to come. With the possibility of failing, I could always come back home. New Orleans is always gonna be home to me.”

What is something, in general, that you want people to know about makeup artist?

"It is a JOB. It is not a hobby. If someone is charging out of your price range, their prices are not negotiable, unless they say so. We purchase products for a minimum of 20 skin tones. The cost of these products are not inexpensive. As prominent members of the beauty industry, we do not get PTO, sick days, or health insurance. Our prices reflect our quality services.”

“I DO NOT LOOK AT OTHER ARTISTS’ SOCIAL MEDIA AND COMPARE MYSELF TO THEM. PLEASE DO NOT LOOK AT SOMEONE ELSE AND THINK YOU’RE NOT GROWING JUST BECAUSE THEIR GROWTH SEEMS TO BE COMING QUICKER. YOUR TIME IS YOUR TIME. WHEN YOU’RE READY, GOD IS GONNA CONNECT YOU WITH PEOPLE THAT CAN TAKE YOU PLACES YOU NEVER IMAGINED.”

What’s next for your brand?

"I, honestly, want to do mentoring. I want to come home to New Orleans and give business classes. There is a lack of business etiquette, here, in the makeup artist community. I want to teach artist how to do their taxes, price their services, and produce contracts. I learned all of these things once I moved to NYC. Growing up in New Orleans, we have a 'Big Easy mind frame' were we become comfortable staying here instead of branching out into other markets across the country. I want to help other people BOSS UP and make their dreams a reality.”

Social media allows us to give off a false sense of perfection. It makes everything look easy. Was the journey easy for you?

"IT'S NOT EASY. It's never gonna be easy. If you want to be self-employed and freelance, understand that it is a process. You will need to have patience with yourself and faith. There were times when I had to decide if I was gonna use my last $100 to buy makeup. I BOUGHT THE MAKEUP. If it is your gift and passion, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get things done. My business, goals, and brand is so important to me. When it's time for you to embark on this journey, it's gonna be a whirlwind. I've had to start over TWICE: once in Dallas, TX and once in NYC. Even now, I still have a lot to learn. I'm trying to build myself to where I can comfortably retire or work for only one big client like Oprah or Beyonce.”

Do you have anything else you would like to share or want people to know?

"EDUCATE YOURSELF! No matter what industry you're in, you will have to educate yourself and find the right ways to invest in yourself. You must invest in yourself. If you don't invest in yourself, nobody else will. Go to classes, put money on the side to build your business, and network. You never know who you will meet that can help to build your business. Also, your image is everything. Look the part you're playing. Your clients have to believe that you can provide a quality product. Lastly, Remember to stay true to yourself. When it's time to grow, there will be some people who can't grow with you but do not burn any bridges."
