Jdot_Smith that's who I am, but to most, I'm just Josh. Fashion has always been my ambition. It started as me just having an opinion about design. I understood clothing and style at a young age. I would help my mom with styling, as a little boy. I don’t know how this came about but this has always been my passion, since I was a child. Throughout grade school, I was always in talented and visual art so I explored: painting, digital design, drawing, photography, and now fashion design. As you can see, my artistic background is diverse. I decided to go to college to become an architect thinking that knowledge would make me a better designer (which it did), but I wish I would have just followed my heart and studied apparel design in college.
Studying architecture in college really sculpted my perspective as a designer. It’s made me appreciate the time, effort, and dedication good design requires. It’s not fly by night like it seems to most. Great work takes time. I know that reworking ideas is inevitable because it just doesn’t always work the first time. Fashion is a conviction, its cathartic for me. I feel relieved when I can get inspired, sketch out a design and then manifest it on the sewing machine. I want to fill a void of artistic freedom in the fashion industry. I persistently see brands offering designs I have already seen somewhere else. My job is to incorporate creative influences from various reference points in culture, past or present, to develop the future for Jdot_Smith. I love art history from all culture but more recently I've become overjoyed with African patterns and textiles. I think it's really dope that darkskin/brownskin women can be considered high fashion in today’s fashion industry. I respect Zac Posen for his Black Models Matter initiative. I love that black women are fashionable and have their own sense of style & culture. This excites me because I plan on contributing to uplifting black women in the fashion industry. What people can expect from me is a mix of high end fashion, streetwear, and sportswear with an ethnic mix.
I consider myself an independent designer and my focus is fashion. I have a multidisciplinary approach to fashion design. That consists of being a visionary, seamstress, graphic designer, and business man. I literally started sewing less than 2 years ago, and I love it. It’s tough, but I get it. Nothing is supposed to be easy. Lately, I have been constructing pieces for my wife, daughter and myself. This process has been fun because I have to think about innovation, fit, styling and a social media campaign which I shoot, myself. Right now I’m in the beginning stages of my fashion career, but I know this is my time to grind, to show, prove myself, and ultimately grow. I will do fashion shows, collaborations and editorial shoots, all within the right time. I have patience and favor, and I know that this is only the beginning.
